The complex of lakes and lagoons in Rhodope is one of the most important wetlands in Greece, protected by the Ramsar Convention and included in the Natura 2000 Network. Lake Vistonida, one of the largest in the country, and Ismarida, the only freshwater lake in Thrace, host rich fish fauna and serve as a stopover for hundreds of migratory birds. The lagoons of Porto Lagos, Xirolimni, Karatza, Alyki, Ptelea, and Elos create a unique natural mosaic with special ecological value, while the presence of the monastery of the same name in Porto Lagos strengthens the connection of the landscape with the cultural and religious tradition of the region.

Lake Vistonida

Lake Vistonida, the fourth largest lake in Greece, covers an area of approximately 45,100 acres and is one of the most important wetlands in the country. The lake is one of the main habitats in the area, hosting a large number of birds, such as pelicans, herons, and flamingos, as well as a variety of aquatic species.
Vistonida had played a significant role in antiquity as well, as the ancient city of the Bistones, which is associated with mythology and King Diomedes, was located close to its shores.   • “Sarai Loukoum” with grape syrup and hazelnut;
  • “Pasha Loukoum” with honey, many nuts and dried fruits (plums and dates), and the addition of blackberry;
  • “Ekmek Loukoum” with butter, vanilla, and topped with kataifi;
  • “Vezir Loukoum,” etc.
