The Porto Lagos lagoon is a labyrinthine wetland complex connecting Lake Vistonida with the Thracian Sea. It is an ecologically sensitive area, featuring high biodiversity and rare species of fauna and flora.

The settlement of Porto Lagos is one of the most picturesque fishing villages in Thrace, preserving traditional architecture and a strong maritime character. Its strategic location has historically made it one of the most important trade centers in the area, serving as a port for transporting goods between the inland and coastal areas. 
Today, the settlement remains alive, with fish taverns and small businesses that maintain its traditional identity. Visitors can stroll through narrow alleys, admire the old fishermen's houses, and enjoy the local cuisine, which is based on fresh seafood.

Lake Vistonida, the fourth largest lake in Greece, covers an area of approximately 45,100 acres and is one of the most important wetlands in the country. Vistonida had played a significant role in antiquity as well, as the ancient city of the Bistones, which is associated with mythology and King Diomedes, was located close to its shores. The pilgrimage to the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni Vathyrryakos is one of the most significant religious events in Thrace. Every year, on August 23rd, crowds of believers from all over the region flock to the monastery to honor the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which, according to tradition, was revealed in a brilliant vision.

Nuts—particularly famous are the roasted chickpeas of Komotini in several varieties—salty, spicy, fluffy with colored sugar paste, the renowned leblebia, tahini & coffee, and the soutzouk loukoum of Komotini, which according to tradition was originated in Komotini and comes in various types: 

• “Sarai Loukoum” with grape syrup and hazelnut;
• “Pasha Loukoum” with honey, many nuts and dried fruits (plums and dates), and the addition of blackberry;
• “Ekmek Loukoum” with butter, vanilla, and topped with kataifi;
• “Vezir Loukoum,” etc. 

All these products reflect the unique gastronomic and artisanal tradition of the area.

Revival of customs by the ethnotopic associations of Komotini throughout the year, based on the traditional customary calendar: Bambougeroi during the Twelve Days and Camel’s custom, Gastronomy Festival on the occasion of St. Marina’s feast organized by the Cultural Association of Thrylorio, KomOn Party during the Carnival in Komotini, Christmas village in the Municipal Park of Komotini.

The National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is one of the most important protected habitats in Greece, encompassing Lakes Vistonida and Ismarida, as well as the lagoons in the area. Its extensive wetland system hosts over 260 bird species and a large number of rare species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.

The monastery maintains strong ties with Mount Athos and is a center of worship, attracting many believers during religious holidays. Its architectural design is simple; however, its location and natural integration into the landscape make it unique. Additionally, the monastery offers excellent views of the wetland, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
